This is a lovely place to stay. It is very clean and offers many thoughtful details such as beach mats and towels, coolers, umbrellas, plenty of towels, flashlights, a very nicely equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, washer and dryer, information on the area… They seem to have thought of everything. We highly recommend a stay here.

This is an excellent place to stay. Located in a small and cozy neighborhood with only a few neighbors. Just a 5 minute walk from Black Sand Beach. The unit includes WiFi, a washer, dryer, outdoor shower, furnished bedrooms, living room and kitchen. On the lanai there are tables, sofas, and a BBQ grill. There were quite a few mosquitoes and geckos, but this is expected from the environment here. Amazing days filled with sunshine and nice, soothing rain at night. Coqui frogs are always a lovely sound when the sun goes down. I would stay here again.

Beautiful comfortable home in the Puna jungle

The house is very much as pictures and has obviously been renovated and decorated with love. As mentioned, it has an odd set-up with really 2 separate living areas (downstairs studio and upstairs main house). Super comfy king beds in both spaces. Kitchen well-appointed. Fabulous outdoor spaces (4 decks/sitting area, 3 of which are covered & essential for life in the jungle). Kehena is a long way from town, which you should know if you have never been to this part of the Island (15 min drive from Pahoa grocery stores, restaurants). I love the jungle, the coqui frog choruses, the pounding rain in the metal roof. The beach is a 5 minute walk away. Fishermen in the mornings, hippie folks in the afternoons. Jeana from Hawaii Life quickly answered our questions by text. We visited just as HI opened to tourists in Nov 2020, seeking to be in a beautiful place but keep to ourselves while home schooled our 9 year old and escaped from the snow and cold Omar home in Alaska.

A Quaint Hideaway

It was a quiet peaceful stay in a quaint plantation style home. The only issue was that the living room couches are better appointed for outdoor living and uncomfortable. It is located in a more remote area of the island although the beach was busy most of the time. The place is well stocked and the outdoor areas including lanais are exceptional and well kept. The outdoor shower was a nice experience. It was great to have the laundry downstairs away from the main living area and we didn’t need to bring many clothes since the washer/dryer worked well. The art and design of the place gave a nostalgic warm island ambience.

The Everything House

Very very clean, had everything you would ever need in case you forgot something. Very close to 2018 lava flow, was very interesting to see the impact of that close by. Kehene beach is within walking distance and is a beautiful black sand beach.

Owner’s Response:  Aloha Justin, we are so happy you had an enjoyable stay, and found everything you needed to be comfortable in our home. We greatly appreciate your 5 star review as well! A Hui Ho (Until we meet again)…Safe travels..

Great Rental, Beautiful Property.

A short walk to Kehena Black Sand Beach, this property had everything we needed. A beautiful yard, nicely furnished sitting areas, a well equipped kitchen, good quality BBQ, WiFi, comfortable bed. Everything was clean and well maintained. Sounds of the outdoors can be heard at night, so bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. We loved watching dolphins at the clothing optional beach, and swimming in the waves. Shopped for groceries at Foodland in Keaau on our way in.

Owner’s Response: We are so happy you were comfortable during your stay at our property! We hope to see you again.

Reviewer Comments:  Amazing jungle hideaway. Very clean throughout. The kitchen had almost every conceivable gadget and appliance , some we didn’t know what they were for! The multiple lanais were great. Appropriate screening and ceiling fans allowed cooling ventilation. The evening chorus of coqui frogs was impressive – consider earplugs ! The grounds were beautiful and we found fresh avocados. BBQ was clean and worked well ( as did all the appliances ) . Highly recommend this property !!

Owner’s Response:We are so happy you had a wonderful stay at our home with its Jungle setting ! We greatly appreciate your 5 star review as well.

Reviewer Comments:

We were a party of three … one couple and one single. The house was perfect for us with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. We were able to share the community spaces of 4 balconies/patios, living room, dining room, and kitchen where we prepared many of our meals. The dining room was large enough to accommodate the four family members who joined us for Christmas dinner (total of 7). The neighborhood was quiet and beautiful. We were serenaded at night by frogs (coqui). It was really lovely all the way around!

Perfect Place For Us

The house is lovely and has everything one could want for comfort and convenience. they seem to have thought of everything. We really loved staying here!

Owner’s Response:  Thank you for the 5 stars and review. We are happy you enjoyed your stay. And we look forward to hosting you again.

I love this house. First, I travel with my son, who needs his own space. This small paradise dishes out the goods! The kid stays downstairs in his own suite with its own entry, full bathroom and an extra outside shower! The upstairs is also perfect for me! The kitchen is fantastic, and this is coming from a guy that loves to cook. The dinning room is airy and roomy. The master bedroom has a lovely exterior deck that looks over this private residence. If you like privacy in a very tropical and green jungle punctuated by gorgeous flowers, this is your place.

Owner’s Response: We are glad to hear you found our home to be comfortable and well set up for you and your son . We greatly appreciate your review as well!

Great house, private, serene and comfortable

Rob D.

The kitchen in this house is fabulous which means a lot to us since we cook all our own meals and rarely eat out. Clearly the owners come and stay in their house as there are lots of spices available as well as balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The knives are good and the appliances are great. All the conveniences of home. We enjoyed both the front and back decks equally and the outdoor shower is a treat. We spent one whole day hiking in Volcano NP and one day up north visiting the Botanical gardens and then winding our way home on back roads. Wednesday night is a happening at the end of hwy 137 at Uncle Robert’s marketplace. The Lebanese vendor has wonderful falafel sandwiches. We walked out to the ocean edge and marveled that we had been at the other end of the closed road just the day before. For us, the fact that the house is a bit out of the way is a plus for us. No traffic noise and great ambience. We would definitely like to come back. Preferably in a drier month and for a longer stay. The write-up is a very accurate description of this rental.

Owner’s Response: Aloha Rob and Linda,Mahalo for choosing to stay at Hali a Kimo Kali and for being such wonderful guests. We look forward to having you return to this beautiful home. Kind Regards, Jamie

Tranquil Hideaway with a Chefs Dream Kitchen

Kingston, Ontario

My spouse and I and our 6 month old son stayed in this beautiful vacation home and had a wonderful relaxing time! Firstly we arrived and found that there was a pack n play at the residence for our son to use (so helpful and thoughtful!). The kitchen had everything thing we needed to cook delicious meals in- and for sleepy new parents a state of the art coffee maker and coffee grinder allowing us to enjoy fresh Kona coffee first thing every morning. Reading on the front lanai in the mornings was very peaceful with the wind in the trees and relaxing in the shade of the back lanai in the afternoon heat was wonderful. The beach is a two minute walk away and very beautiful. Sleeping at night with the chirps of the coqui frogs is like having your own personal sound machine- very magical. And the bed!! So comfortable with the softest sheets imaginable. We loved uncle Roberts night market on Wednesday, Pahoa Fresh Fish and driving the scenic red road. Everything was well thought out and made our stay very relaxing.

We absolutely loved the house and quaint neighborhood. Just a couple blocks from the ocean in a very tranquil area. The southern part of the island has a lot to offer such as the volcano, cute little beaches and waterfalls. We found a couple of great restaurants in Hilo our favorite was Pineapples. Wednesday night go to uncle Roberts farmers market great experience great food live band. Mahalo 🌴

We really enjoyed staying in this house. The lanais are so great to lounge on. It’s a great place to hang out in, which we did a lot. All the trees in the yard create a quiet, shaded, and cool place to hang out. The house was spotless and has a great kitchen to prepare meals in. Our family included my 83 year old mother and my 5 year old daughter and we had no issues. The house is very kid friendly. We really appreciated all the extra supplies that were in the house, such as shampoo, first aid kits, bug repellent, sunscreen, snorkeling gear, and more! And the advice about places to visit, and to get supplies nearby was super helpful. Be sure to book over a Wednesday so you can go to the night market on Wednesday eve at Kalapana! It’s not to be missed. The neighborhood is great.
A few things to know that may be helpful for future guests: – There is no door to the bedroom upstairs, just a curtain that hangs between this room and the kitchen. This was not really visible in the photos. It wasn’t an issue for us, but I can see how it might be inconvenient for some families. – The coqui frogs can be really loud at night – this didn’t bother us much. But if you may want to bring earplugs if you think you may be kept awake. Closing the windows helps, but if it’s hot out that can be uncomfortable. We visited in December, and on cooler nights (under 65 F), they were quiet. – The house is quite isolated – it’s a 20-25 minute drive to the closest town, Pahoa, where there’s a grocery store. And there are few options for food in the area. We only found Uncle Awa’s at the Kalapana encampment, which wasn’t always open. This was exactly what we wanted. But guests expecting access to lots of amenities and shopping might be disappointed. – The nearby Kehena black sand beach is great. But access is down a very steep rocky climb. My 83-year old mom could not take this trail, so she was not able to go to the beach, which was a disappointment for us as we thought we were renting a house that had easy access to the ocean.
The house was great. The lanais were amazing. And it was one of the best stocked houses I have stayed at. Really appreciated the bug repellant, sunscreen, umbrellas, snorkeling masks, beach mats, towles, spices, etc. Super useful. That’s a great kitchen too.

This is a great house. Well appointed and comfortable. Jamie is very helpful and easy to work with. I loved being near the red road; it is an incredible drive. There are also great places to eat healthy meals not far away. The ocean is beautiful. The coqui frog did not bother us at all. Nature sounds never do. We would stay here again and recommend it.

To begin, we’ve been visiting Hawai’i and staying in rental houses for decades. James and Gary’s beautiful Hale a Kimo Kali is easily the nicest home we’ve ever rented. The house, grounds, furnishings, decorating and attention to detail are exceptional. The house is incredibly well equipped, any thing you could possibly think of that you might want or need is there for you. If you’re planning to visit Hilo side of the Big Island this is the house you want.

Retreat in the jungle!

***** 5 of 5

A clean, well-appointed retreat in a lush tropical oasis with sounds of the jungle all around. 3 covered decks with lots of furniture to relax in. Furnishings in a Hawaiian theme added to the experience. It’s a drive to get to any services except the beach, which is quite nearby. The two bedrooms on different floors with outside but not inside access worked fine for us as two retired couples. Worth a repeat visit!

This house is wonderful. Jim and Gary did a great job making it comfortable.

Loved the floor plan. House was very comfortable. We cooked dinner here each night and sat in the dining room (loved the space). The neighborhood was nice and great for strolls. We walked a couple of miles towards the northeast along 137 and checked out other housing developments. There were other folks biking, running and walking too. We enjoyed the slow pace on this side of the island. The house was like being at home. Jim and Gary have done an excellent job with the space. They had everything you need from flash lights to coffee grinders, shampoo, body wash, plenty of ice trays, cooler, travel coffee mugs for morning walks, etc. Kehena beach is a quick walk. Mornings seemed to be the calmest and less busy. Visiting volcano national park was excellent. We checked out the lava viewing at Kalapana but were not into renting bikes to be bike out there at night. I believe it was 8 miles round trip. You could pay to get dropped off 2 miles from viewing and walk or bike from there. Lots of great trails up at the park to see volcano sights too.

I would definitely return and recommend. This side of the island is a special place and this house was perfect.

Gorgeous home and yard, with beach close by

***** 5 of 5

We quite enjoyed our stay. House and yard are gorgeous. Many geckos, birds and a cat around the property. Quiet neighborhood. No cell service at the house, but it is available once you get back on the main highway. Lots of things to do within short driving distance such as tide pools and hot spring, and the trailhead for the lava spout. Black sand beach is close by, it is a very steep climb down, but well worth it!! It is clothing optional, so there is a range of clothed to no clothes people. Beach is a 5min walk from the house. Jamie, the property manager, was super helpful and was very quick to get back to us with any questions we had with the property. I would definitely suggest staying at this house. We will definitely be back again.

This home is wonderful! It has a great location and it is comfortable & stylish. This kitchen is great to cook in! They even have a rice cooker.

Tons of out door space to relax in, steps from the beach & close to the walk or ride out to the lava. The second bedroom is very private & has it own entrance, bathroom, and lanai Both beds are very comfortable. There are mango, star fruit, banana, avocado, passion fruit tress right on the property. We picked fruit often. It was lovely. The house also felt very private. They neighborhood was also quite & friendly. The owners & manager of the property where helpful & attentive. We will be back!

Spent week here with another couple-fantastic house with plenty of room and privacy for both couples. Enjoyed the many lanai’s. Spacious, clean and lots of nice touches. Staff was very courteous and accommodating. Close to Volcano park and everything on East side. Stayed on Kona side couple of years ago–this is better by far. I would return to this place in a heartbeat and recommend to anyone. Was able to visit park, Kona side, East side waterfalls, Hilo. Perfect place if you are interested in hiking out to the lava that is flowing into the ocean – it’s incredible!

We spent a wonderful week at this rental in Kehena. Just as described in the VRBO listing, the rental was, well appointed, clean, well-maintained and comfortable, and the site was stunning–easily the nicest unit we have ever rented during our four visits to Hawai’i. Did I mention the beds? So comfortable!

We had meals at Luquin’s ( good Tex-Mex) and one at Kaleo’s Bar and Grill ( the food was delicious); both are in the town of Pahoa. We had an upscale Hawai’ian plate lunch served in a bento box at the Volcano House Restaurant in the National Park and are happy to report that the food there has been much improved, and the new decor is lovely. The view of the old crater from the restaurant remains impressive–no renovation needed there.

We always enjoy visiting the beautiful Hawai’i Tropical Botanical Garden north of Hilo and were happy to find that the sandwiches and smoothies at “What’s Shakin’?) just north of the garden were as good as we remembered.

Hilo is a charming town with it’s wonderful farmers’ market, which is fun and a good place to buy local fruits and vegetables. (The shopping malls with the usual stores in the newer part of Hilo can be useful.)

I definitely recommend the VRBO rental unit and Kehena on the Big Island for a restful tropical vacation.

A nice home & adventure in Puna
***** 5 of 5

My husband and I have visited the Big Island many times and have always wished to see the lava flowing. When we heard that the lava was flowing from Kilauea we quickly made plans to return to the island. Because of its proximity to Kilauea we decided to stay in Puna, specifically Pahoa. We came across Hale a Kimo Kali on HomeAway. The home is tucked away in the jungle and was just as it stated in its description. The house is private, comfortable and close to all the sites we wanted to explore on this side of the island. We would get up in the morning and take the short stroll to the nearby black sand beach and watch the sun rise. On some mornings we would have the beach all to ourselves or share it with a local resident doing their morning yoga routine. On weekends the beach does get busy with locals. We where informed about the coqui frogs in the area. My husband and I being nature lovers didn’t find their nighty chirping a bother. As the sun sets be prepared for their mating calls to begin. We booked a lava boat tour with Lava Ocean Adventures, located a short drive from the house. The two of us thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the tour and seeing the lava up close from the water was a magical experience for the both of us. Captain Shane was a wonderful tour guide. We would like to return again while the lava is still flowing and do a walking tour to see the lava. And when we do so, we would definitely plan on staying at Hale a Kimo Kali. We enjoyed our stay.
